The History of Monadnock Berries

our back yard

The land was first farmed in 1767 by David Wheeler who built the homestead in 1770. The farm has had fifteen owners over the years; the Steinbecks bought it in 1976 and began planting the blueberries by hand, starting with the front field.

The Levick family emmigrated from Herefordshire, England in 1995 and purchased Mondnock Berries in the spring of 1996, as soon as we saw the gorgeous view! Mr Levick grew blackcurrants and cider apples in the UK, so the he was happy to continue growing fruit.

Over the years we have planted two fields of raspberries, two of late blueberries, as well as black currant, redcurrant and gooseberry patches. We also planted a raspberry patch, as strawberry field and a squash patch at our neighbor's farm, and are developing PYO raspberries and strawberries in hot houses at our farm stand on Rt 12 in Troy for the 2008-2009 season. We try to challenge ourselves with new crops, plantations, products and growing techniques each year while remaining a favorite summer sanctuary for many friendly customers who are as passionate about berries as we are!

We were proud to be a Yankee Magazine's "Editor's Pick" for 2007 as well as 1998 and were chosen for one of New Hampshire Magazine's Best of NH 2004 awards. We thank all who have been involved in gaining us such recognition, but most of all we thank our customers who keep our business alive and thriving!
