Monadnock Berries is proud to announce that we have been chosen as an Editors Pick for the 2007 Yankee Magazine Travel Guide to New England. Thank you to all our staff and customers who have made this possible!

Strawberry Season Earlier Than Expected! (6 19 07)

Making an educated guess as to when fruit will ripen is often a very tricky job. While we were planning to open for strawberries on June 29th this year, we will actually be open for picking at 8am on June 23rd. We hope to stay open until noon each day, but as the demand is usually more than our crop can handle, it is often a good idea to call us first and pay attention to the signs on the common that say whether we are open or picked out. The early bird catches the strawberry, and man are they worth getting up on time for!

Name our new kids! (6 19 07)

"Last year the mini donkeys names were chosen out of many great suggestions, the brown donkey is now called” Mocha” and the grey donkey is “Latte”, pretty good don’t you think? So how about it, come and put your favorite name in the bucket and you just might be the winner! Around here the goats rule the roost, we watch everyone arrive ready to pick berries so perhaps a dignified name like commander or chief would be good, or maybe something softer like bubbles or silky is more your idea. Some of the most recent suggestions are fluffer-nutter, skittles, caramel, and peanut. I think someone has food on their mind don’t you? All we ask is that you don’t mention berry names like strawberry because we are not pinkish red or blueberry cause we are not blue either. Here is a hint, I am a beautiful pale soft light brown kid with white patches and my brother is more a rich chocolate brown with white and fawn patches. Watch for the signs on the common that say the berry season has started, come on by and say Hi, you’ll recognize me I’m the cute one in the white picket fence pen just jumping around with my bro. Choose our names, drop the suggestion in the bucket, make a wish, and presto on July 19, 2007 two names will be drawn from the bucket and we will finally have our new names. I am soooo excited I can hardly wait."

MAMA Mini Cooper meet scheduled for July 28th (Jun 17th, 07)

Now an annual event, the MAMA Mini Cooper BBQ will be on July 28th, the same day as the Troy Arts Festival! Bring your mini cooper (or steal a friend's) and come on over for a BBQ lunch, music and our lawn full of the coolest cars around!

Late Spring UPDATE (6 17 07)

This season we have imported bumblebees to our farm. Due to the decline in numbers of honeybees we realized we would need help to pollinate the blossom. The bumblebee tends to be less aggressive than the honeybee and will fly during extreme temperatures from as low as 38 degrees rain or shine. When you come picking look for the large green and white boxes that are their hives, and take a moment to watch them at work.
The goat house is expanding again. We are awaiting the arrival of two Mini Nubian kids sometime mid June. These will be our first Mini Nubians and will be bottle-fed three times a day for a while. The regular goats, Boots and Merlin, and yearlings Little Cow and Burnt Toast will have fun teaching the new kids how to jump and give goat kisses.
Mocha and Latte, the mini donkeys, have both had their first birthdays this April. They are really looking forward to being brushed and petted with the children who visit the farm this season. They have a new day barn and paddock to show off too.
The first fruit we will be picking this season is Strawberries. The strawberry field is located a little way before the blueberry plantation, so follow the signs. Do you think we will have to “walk the plank” because of the mud like last year? Whatever the weather the crop looks promising.
The Raspberries ripen next, in early July, followed closely by the gooseberries, red, black and white currants and then, ta da, the Blueberries mid July. We do not have any picking dates yet due to Mother Nature’s sense of humor!

MEET OUR NEW GOAT FRIENDS (June 13th, 2006)

Little Cow, Burnt Toast and Merlin are the newest babies to join our farm. Merlin is a year-old brown Nigerian goat with a fabulous beard, Burnt Toast and Little Cow are baby Nigerian / Pigmy goat crosses. Merlin is very friendly and used to walk on a leash at his previous home, the babies are much more skittish and miss their Mamas but Little Cow has formed quite a bond with Mrs Levick in the day or two they have been here.
